About
411: Disability Awareness was created to educate students by breaking down social norms surrounding physical and intellectual disabilities. This hands-on approach includes a bag full of learning tools that introduce students to the challenges of their peers with disabilities. Students K-6 are encouraged to participate in activities that allow them to experience what it is like to live with a specific impairment. The exercises can be as simple as trying to give directions to one student while the rest of the class makes noise to cause a distraction. Together, we then discuss the challenges the students encountered during our exercise and brainstorm a solution that will help their classroom be more inclusive.
"1 in 4 Americans are diagnosed with a physical or mental disability, and 14% of these individuals are in primary education. Over 35% of children within the public education system have a learning impairment, and 13% of these students require some form of special education service. However, many children are undiagnosed due to current testing procedures. Currently, 18% of students with learning disabilities drop out of school, and 35% of working-aged individuals with physical or learning disabilities are unemployed."
